Intent and execution are what make the difference. This is what seperates a renaissance nude and a playboy centerfold. La Vie d'Adèle (released as "Blue is the warmest colour" in the anglophone world), while being a generally good movie which received much critical acclaim suffers from this. The sex scenes are not the issue for me, only how it is at times handled. In his zeal to achieve a certain vision, director Kechiche in my opinion handles this aspect of an otherwise good movie poorly. To return, more directly, to the question of simulated as opposed to unsimulated scenes I think what should decide it is "is anything gained artistically by doing it one way over the other?".
