On their own, adventure and action games feature completely different gameplay. Adventure games are about exploration, experimentation, character interaction and puzzle solving. Typically, they're long and slow-paced. In contrast, action games challenge the player's reflexes, pitting him against alien swarms or racing him down busy alleyways. When the two mix, they form a whole new genre, handpicking the best elements for a given title.

Dragon's Lair One of the first adventure games, "Dragon's Lair" made its original appearance in 1984. Since then, it's received over a dozen face-lifts both to its graphics and gameplay. By the end, it was no longer a simple adventure game; it demanded fast-reflexes. Players guide the young knight Dirk on his quest to rescue a princess, and along the way, he has to dodge, hack and dance his way to victory. With lushly animated graphics, "Dragon's Lair" stood out in its time, looking more like a feature-film cartoon than a 16-bit video game. In 2006, Digital Leisure remastered the original animations and released them on Blu-Ray.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Equip a sword or bow, put on a set of armor and set out to explore the island of Morrowind. The third title in "The Elder Scrolls" series, "Morrowind" is an open-ended adventure with action role- playing combat. If the player wants to, he can spend the whole game in the starting town gathering herbs, catching fish and performing minor quests for the locals. He can also choose to follow an epic story which will decide the fate of a nation. Or he can freely roam the island, replete with cities and hamlets, hundreds of characters, hidden dungeons, dozens of breeds of monster and countless little secrets. In addition, "Morrowind" is one of the most heavily modded games in existence, with thousands of mods in the Planet Elder Scrolls database that add considerable depth the gaming experience.

Secret of Mana Combining elements of adventure games, action games and role-playing games, "Secret of Mana" is a coming-of-age story with a magical twist. The player assumes the role of a young boy who discovers a sword in a lake. Soon, mythic forces whisk him away on an adventure to save the world. Over the course of his journey, he collects and upgrades eight weapons, each leading to distinct gameplay. Two other adventurers also join him, and although the player doesn't directly control them, he can give them general A.I. commands so that everyone works as a team. Originally released on the Super Nintendo in 1993, the developers have since republished it via the iPhone.

Clarence's Big Chance Clarence isn't a looker, and at the age of 35 he still hasn't kissed a woman. However, after a night of chatroom charm, he's secured himself a date. Thus begins "Clarence's Big Chance." The player assumes the role of Clarence, who starts out in his bedroom and must brush his teeth, take a bath, eat a healthy breakfast and gather money for the big date. His house is enormous, though, and filled with rats, vicious cats and rabid dogs. He must evade or kill them along the way. Later stages have Clarence driving to the office, working his job and gathering last minute gifts for the date. Depending on his performance, the player will receive one of five endings. The game is replete with dark British humor.
