Bats are the only mammals capable of flying. There are a great many of them, large and small, and there are nearly 950 different species. It is calculated that one mammal out of ten on the earth is a bat. Their scientific name, chioptera, means 'beings which fly with their hands'. In fact, their wings consist of a double layer and back limbs, and in some species by the tail. Bats live for about thirty years and eat up to tired thousand insects a night. Multiply the figure and in a bats lifetime, it could consume nearly 33 million insects. The bat is like a natural insecticide
In SA, many grain farmers have trees lining their fields. These serve as protection against winds, but also has another sinister function. Grain fields attract vast numbers of birds. Mainly finches. At night these birds nest in the trees. So many farmers then use diesel with poisons, and kill these birds with aeroplane crop sprayers. The residue of this spray settles on insects, rodents and small animals. The result is that bats, snakes, raptures, etc. etc. that feed on the above, die from secondry poisoning. And thus a vicious circle of ecological imbalances is created
