Huskies howl like wolves, they have thick fur and almond-shared eyes. They are the sledge-dogs of the eskimos. Even nowadays, in the far north, where the motor-driven sledge has not yet arrived, some tribes of eskimos owe their survival to huskies. They use them to cross the ice-caps and the frozen rivers and to go hunting for polar bears and seals. In Greenland, a team of huskies will pull a sledge in a fan-shared formation. This arrangement reduces the possibility that the whole team might fall into a crevasse. Thanks to their special fur, huskies can survive the most harsh winters, with temperatures that drop to minus 40 centigrade. A husky's tail is very important. When lying down, they use them like scarves to cover their muzzles and paws so that they dont freeze up. Their are various breeds of husky. The Alaskan Malamute is 60 cms tall and weighs about 40 kilos, the Siberian Husky is smaller and extremly fast. The beautiful Samoyed is white and very affectionate. The Greenland Husky has a black coat and ice-blue eyes. And the Alaskan husky is the splendid result of recent cross-breeding.
